Freckles are small brown spots on the skin which commonly affect individuals with fair, sensitive skin. Freckles are typically seen on the face, shoulders, and arms, mainly due to overexposure to the sun. While these tiny dots on the skin can be quite annoying, there are several natural ways to get rid of them, such as the following:
- Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a natural bleach that can lighten the skin with its citric acid. You can use the juice from freshly squeezed lemons or buy the pre-squeezed variety in a bottle. Apply the juice gently onto the freckles, avoiding the eyes, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Apply twice every day until the freckles disappear.
- Sour Cream
The lactic acid contained in sour cream is a mild peeling agent, making it a gentle and effective remedy for freckles. It is especially helpful for people with sensitive skin. Apply adequate amount of sour cream onto the freckled areas and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Wipe off with a dry, soft tissue or cloth, or rinse with sour milk or yogurt. Do this once daily.
Honey contains enzymes that aid in lightening skin pigmentation. It is also a natural humectant, which makes it excellent for moisturizing the skin. Stir in honey with water and warm it up in the microwave. Apply on the affected areas and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Repeat these steps daily until your freckles disappear.
Sake is a Japanese rice wine which contains kojic acid, a chelation agent that prevents the overproduction of melanin, causing the freckles to disappear quickly. Mix sake with oatmeal powder, yogurt, and honey to make a paste. Apply onto the freckled areas of your skin and leave on for roughly 30 minutes before rinsing.
Buttermilk contains mild acids and bleaching properties that also help lighten freckles. It also makes skin supple and smooth. Apply buttermilk onto the freckles and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Do this twice daily until your freckles fade away.
- Red Onion
The sulfur content of onions has exfoliative property which is useful for removing freckles and dark spots. Slice a red onion and rub gently on the affected areas twice daily. Do this every day until you’re satisfied with the results.
Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that helps get rid of blemishes and freckles. Extract the juice of papaya and apply onto the freckled areas using a cotton ball. Gently massage and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Repeat these steps once daily until your freckles disappear.
- Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV contains malic acid, an organic compound that exfoliates darkened skin cells, revealing lighter, freckle-free skin. Mix equal amounts of ACV and honey, and apply on the affected areas. Leave on for 15-20 minutes then rinse with warm water. Apply once daily.
- Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera contains aloesin which aids in depigmentation of freckles and dark spots, and inhibits progression of the pigmentation process. Apply fresh aloe vera gel on the freckled areas and massage gently for 2-3 minutes. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Do this once daily.
- Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Amla is a powerful antioxidant agent. It contains gallic acid and ellagic acid which were shown to inhibit melanin production, resulting in lighter skin. Mix amla powder with water to make a paste. Apply on the freckles and let dry. Rinse after 10 minutes. Do this once every 2-3 days.
- Baking Soda
Baking soda exfoliates skin and removes dead and darkened cells from the skin’s surface. Combine a pinch of baking soda with 1-2 drops of castor oil. Apply onto the freckled areas and leave on for about 30 minutes before rinsing. Do this once or twice daily.
- Shea Butter
Shea butter has natural healing properties: it can heal dark spots, scars, blemishes, and freckles with regular use for at least a few weeks. It also hydrates the skin. Add a small amount of organic shea butter to your palms and warm it up with your fingers. Apply on the affected skin and leave on overnight. Do this routine every night for best results.
- Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter makes the skin supple, smooth, and nourished. It contains antioxidants that reduce freckles, stretch marks, and age spots. Cleanse your entire face with a gentle cleanser or exfoliator. Pat dry your skin with a soft towel and then apply 100% cocoa butter onto the freckles. Massage gently until the butter is well absorbed into your skin. Leave on overnight. Do this remedy every night until freckles disappears.
The antioxidant properties of turmeric are effective in reducing freckles, dark spots, and blemishes with regular use. Mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric with water and apply onto the affected skin areas. Leave on for roughly 15 minutes before scrubbing off. Rinse with warm water. Do this every day for fast results.
- Kiwi & Strawberries
Kiwi contains antioxidants which protect skin and prevent skin damage, while strawberries exfoliate skin to lighten freckles. Mix 1 kiwi fruit and 1-2 strawberries, and apply onto the affected areas. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with water. Do this 2-3 times per week.
Aside from using the natural ingredients listed above, you can prevent freckles from appearing by doing the following:
- Protect your skin from the sun.
This is perhaps the most efficient way to get rid of freckles. When going out, wear hats or other protective gear to shield your skin from the harshness of the sun. Also wear sunscreens with SPF50 at all times. Avoid going out when not necessary to save your skin from UV radiation and prevent the appearance of freckles.
- Tweak your diet.
A diet rich in Vitamin C helps lighten skin. Eating citrus fruits produces the same effect as when you apply them topically. Other foods that are rich in Vitamin C are berries, bell peppers, and tomatoes.
