How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Permanently Overnight

Dark under-eye circles can make you look ill or tired. Especially if they are noticeable, you may be self-conscious about them. Dark under-eye circles can be due to a number of factors like poor nutrition, dehydration, an unhealthy lifestyle, prevalence of allergies, and lack of sleep.

Dark under-eye circles do not seriously harm your skin, but they make you look exhausted, tired, older, and unhealthy. You can get rid of dark under-eye circles through makeup, natural remedies, dermatological procedures, and eye creams, among many other countless ways to remove them.

Below are some of the ways to remove dark circles overnight.

Cold Compress

Cold compress may contract the blood vessels under your eyes. Applying a cold compress can greatly help to reduce dark circles and eye puffiness. In cold milk or cold water, soak a washcloth. For several minutes, place it over your closed eyelids.

You can also wrap several ice cubes in a soft cloth napkin. For a few minutes, place it under your eyes. Alternatively, you can use a cold spoon, a chilled teabag, or a bag of frozen peas. Do these remedies a few times each day.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil

Massaging this oil under your eyes is effective to lighten under-eye circles. Coconut oil, because of its moisturizing properties, promotes smooth skin and prevents fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes.

On the area under the eyes, massage a few drops extra-virgin coconut oil. Leave it on the area for several hours, and then wash the oil off. For several months or until you get the desired results, repeat the process twice or thrice a day.

Tea Bags

Tea’s antioxidants and caffeine can help to get rid of dark under-eye circles overnight. They can also reduce puffiness by reducing fluid retention and shrinking blood vessels. The tannins particularly help decrease discoloration and sweating.

Chill two used black or green tea bags for 1 ½ hours. Put a tea bag over each eye and leave for 10-15 minutes. Remove them afterwards, and wash your face. Do this process two times a day for several weeks.

Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help reduce dark under-eye circles. Turmeric can also make the area around the eyes softer and smoother.

Mix two tablespoons of pineapple juice and two tablespoons turmeric powder to create a paste, which you will apply to the under-eye area. Leave the paste on for 10 minutes before wiping it off with a damp, soft cloth. Do this every day until you get the desired results.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice’s Vitamin C content can help eliminate under-eye dark circles. Vitamin C naturally has skin-lightening properties. Apply lemon juice (fresh) around the eyes with a cotton ball. Leave the juice on the area for 10 minutes and wash it off. For a few weeks, do this once a day.

Alternatively, you can make a paste by mixing a tablespoons of lemon juice, two tablespoons tomato puree, a pinch of turmeric powder and besan (gram flour). Apply the paste around the eyes, and rinse the paste off after 10-15 minutes. Do this twice or thrice a week. However, some people can have sensitive skin. If the juice causes a burning sensation, stop using it.

Tomato

With their bleaching properties, tomatoes can immensely help to lighten the skin. Mix ½ teaspoon lemon juice with 1 teaspoon tomato juice. Apply the mixture gently on to the dark circles and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off with water. Do this twice daily for several weeks. Plain tomato juice can also work wonders.

Alternatively, you can drink a glass of tomato juice with salt, lemon juice, and some mint leaves. Make sure you immediately drink the juice after preparing, for best results. Drink the juice once or twice daily for about a week.

Raw Potato

Potato’s natural bleaching properties can help eliminate puffiness around the eyes and can help lighten dark under-eye circles. Grate 1 or 2 raw potatoes and extract the juice. Soak a cotton ball and put it over your closed eyes, letting the juice cover the eyelids and the under-eye circles.

Let the juice sit for 10-15 minutes, and rinse it off with cold water. For a few more weeks, repeat the process once or twice a day. To remove dark circles, you can also use thick, raw potato slices, instead of potato juice. You can put the potato slices directly over the affected eye area.

Cucumber

Cucumbers contain mild-astringent and skin-lightening properties that help eliminate dark under-eye circles. They also have a refreshing and soothing effect.

Slice thickly a fresh cucumber and chill the slices for 30 minutes. For about 10 minutes, place the sliced cucumbers over the affected area. After removing the cucumber, use water to wash the eye area. For a week or more, repeat the process twice a day.

More Tips

  • Get sufficient rest and sleep.
  • Limit your exposure to the sun.
  • Before you sleep, remove makeup as it can irritate your eyes.
  • As much as possible, do not rub your eyes, as blood vessels can dilate. It can make the under-eye circles look darker.
  • Eat mindfully and consume foods rich in Vitamins A, E, and C.
  • Restrict caffeine and alcohol consumption, and stop smoking if you do. Smoking can damage skin cells, and caffeine and alcohol can lead to dehydration that weakens the eye area’s delicate skin.
  • To avoid under-eye circles due to fluid pooling in your lower eyelids, raise your head by adding at least 2 pillows under your head before sleeping.
  • Throughout the day, drink a lot of water to eliminate water retention, which may exacerbate the problem.
